Importer-Exporter Code (IEC) Registering
Registering for an Importer-Exporter Code (IEC) is a mandatory step for anyone looking to start an import-export business in India. The process is fully digitized and managed by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).
As of 2025, the registration is linked directly to your PAN, and the 10-digit IEC number is now identical to your PAN.

Step-by-Step Registration Process
The entire process usually takes 1–2 working days for approval once submitted correctly.
- Register on DGFT Portal: Visit dgft.gov.in and click on 'Register'. Choose the "Importer/Exporter" role and verify your mobile number and email via OTP.
- Apply for IEC: Once logged in, go to Services > IEC Profile Management > Apply for IEC.
- Fill Form ANF 2A: Enter details about your business entity, branch offices (if any), and directors/partners.
- Upload Documents: Attach the digital copies of the documents mentioned in the checklist above.
- Fee Payment: Pay the government registration fee of ₹500 via Net Banking, Debit/Credit Card, or UPI.
- E-Sign & Submit: Authenticate your application using an Aadhaar-based OTP (common for individuals) or a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC).
- Download Certificate: Once approved, you can download your e-IEC certificate from your dashboard under the "Print IEC" tab.
💡 Key Facts to Remember
- Lifetime Validity: The IEC is valid for the lifetime of the entity. You do not need to renew it.
- Mandatory Annual Update: Even though it doesn't expire, you must confirm/update your details on the DGFT portal every year between April and June. Failure to do so results in the code being deactivated.
- Modification Fee: If you need to change details (like address or bank account) later, there is a modification fee of ₹200.
- Exemptions: IEC is not required for personal imports (non-commercial) or for government departments.
Warning: Beware of "spurious" websites that look like the DGFT portal but charge high fees. Only use the official .gov.in domain for your application.
