IEC Code (Importer Exporter Code) Registration online
The IEC Code (Importer Exporter Code) is a mandatory 10-digit identification number for businesses in India that wish to engage in international trade (importing or exporting goods/services).
The registration process is entirely online and is handled by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India.
Here is a breakdown of the process and key requirements:
IEC Registration Process Visit the DGFT Website: Go to the official DGFT portal: https://dgft.gov.in/
- User Registration:
- Click on Login > Register.
- Register as an "Importer/Exporter" using your Permanent Account Number (PAN), mobile number, and email ID.
- Verify the OTPs sent to your mobile and email.
- Log in using the credentials received and change the temporary password.
- Apply for IEC:
- Once logged in, go to your Dashboard Importer Exporter Code (IEC) > Apply for IEC.
- Fill out the application form (ANF 2A), providing details about your entity, bank account, proprietor/director information, etc.
- Upload Documents: Upload the required documents (as listed below) in the prescribed format (usually PDF).
- Pay Application Fee: Pay the required government application fee (a nominal amount, typically ₹500, but check the latest fee on the portal). The payment is made through the online payment gateway.
- Sign and Submit: Sign the application using an Aadhaar-based OTP or a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC).
- Issuance: Upon successful verification and payment, the e-IEC certificate is usually generated and issued immediately or very quickly and sent to your registered email ID.

Before starting the online application, ensure you have the following ready:

- Valid PAN Card (of the individual/business entity).
- Valid Mobile Number and Email ID.
- Valid Aadhaar Card (matching PAN details for proprietor/applicant).
- Bank Account Details (a current account in the name of the IEC holder/firm).
- Digital Photograph (3x3 cms) of the signatory applicant/proprietor/director.

Key Points to Remember
- Validity: The IEC has lifetime validity and does not require annual renewal. However, the DGFT mandates all IEC holders to update/modify their IEC profile annually (even if there are no changes) to keep it active.
- GST Registration: The IEC number issued is essentially the same as the applicant's PAN. If a business is registered under GST, the PAN is automatically treated as the IEC for customs purposes, but the separate application with DGFT is still required.
